Introducing Harvey

Harvey Edward Poll

March 26, 2013
3:47 pm
8lbs 5 oz, 21 inches

I chose to be induced with Harvey on his due date if he hadn't arrived on his own by then and the little guy hadn't, so on the morning of Monday, March 25th  I received a call from the Hospital telling me that I would need to be there at 7am on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 for my induction. I won't lie I was a bit nervous about the entire being induced thing, I was not induced with Enzo, so after that phone call I was a little sick to my stomach since I really didn't know what to expect and I most definantly did not want to cause myself a ton of pain. Luckily, that feeling went away rather quickly as I became excited that I would be meeting my new little guy sometime in the next 24-48 hours.
Monday evening we took Enzo over to our wonderful friends, The Hobson's, & dropped him off so we wouldn't have to worry about getting him up, ready and over to their house by 6am on Tuesday. It was a bit odd not having him home that night. Once we got home from dropping Enzo off, we packed the car with all our necessities for our Hospital stay and headed for bed so that we could get as much sleep as possible, since we both knew that we would not be getting much after our little guy arrived.
7 am on Tuesday morning came quickly. We were able to enjoy our drive to the hospital this time since I was not having contractions. It was a much more enjoyable drive. We were able to discuss name options since we had not really decided on the perfect name yet, don't worry we were unable to agree on one within that 20 minute drive either. We arrived at the hospital, checked in at Labor and Delivery and were taken to our room. By 7:30am the nurses had blown 2 of my veins trying to get my IV in. Luckily, the third poke was a charm. The top of my hands were black and blue for a week from where they tried to put the IV the first and second time. By 7:50am they had started me on potocin. Dr. Bean came by at 8:30am to check on me and we decided to go ahead and break my water to see if that would help get the contractions going. 9:30am I received my epidural, heavenly. Much better experience than all the pain I experienced with my labor for Enzo. The next few hours passed slowly, but pain free. We watch a movie, talked, tried to decide on a name and played games on our phones to pass the time.  We finally decided on Harvey Edward Poll about 11 am. By noon I was dilated to a 5, so that was exciting.
About 2:45pm they checked me again and I was at a 9, they called Dr. Bean and started prepping the room for delivery. About 3:15pm I started pushing. The atmosphere in the room was great, the nurses were all joking and laughing with us and each other, along with Dr Bean. After about 3 sets of pushes Harvey's heart rate began to drop so they put me on oxygen to try to help regulate his heart rate. Fortunately, it would always stabilize, but after a few more long hard sets of pushes, Harvey's heart rate was taking longer and longer to come back up. After pushing for about 30 minutes, his head was finally out and they could see that the cord was around his neck.  Dr. Bean ended up helping him out the rest of the way since he was unable to simply lift the cord from around his neck, because Harvey had twisted it around his arm and body as well.  It took Harvey what seemed like forever to make a sound, it was only a few seconds, but those silent seconds seemed like a lifetime. The atmosphere in the delivery room completely changed from laughter and joking to serious nurses working away to get Harvey stabilized and taken care of. They called up a team of nurses and specialist from the nursery and we were soon informed that Harvey would need to be taken down and placed on a C-Pap machine to help open his lungs. He also needed an IV for fluids. We knew the drill since Enzo had to have the same treatment when he was born. Matt went with Harvey to make sure he was well taken care of while I waited for my epidural to wear off. After a couple of hours Harvey was taken off the C-Pap, bathed and snuggling with Daddy. My left leg was still extremely numb so I was still up in recovery. About 6:30pm we were all reunited and I was finally able to snuggle, hold and love on my handsome little Harvey.
